BMW and MINI named in 2011 Ward's 10 Best Engines

In yesterday's announcement of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2011, BMW’s new 3.0L N55 Turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine and the 1.6L Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the MINI Cooper S were both included on the prestigious list. The Ward’s 10 Best Engines competition is designed to recognize powertrains that set new benchmarks in their respective vehicle segments.

BMW’s well-regarded 3.0L N54 twin-turbocharged inline-6 earned Ward’s 10 Best Engines honors in 2007, 2008 and 2009. For 2011, the N55 inline-6 replaced the two individual turbochargers with a single twin-scroll turbocharger that saves weight, improves throttle response, boosts fuel efficiency and reduces friction. It is the first engine to combine turbocharging and high-pressure direct injection with BMW’s Valvetronic throttleless intact system. “For drivability and smoothness, the N55 is unparalleled,” said Ward's Editor, Tom Murphy.

The Ward’s 10 Best Engine’s award was given for the 2011 335i. The N55 engine also appears in the 2011 135i, as well as the new 535i. It can also be found under the hood of the 2011 X5 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Vehicles, as well as the all-new X3 xDrive35i SAV.

As an example of EfficientDynamics in action, the 2011 335i matches the 2010 model in the 0-60 mph sprint at 5.4 seconds but delivers a ten percent improvement in fuel efficiency according to EPA estimates.

A new engine on this year’s list was the 1.6L turbocharged direct-injection I-4 in the Mini Cooper S, which now integrates the BMW Group’s Valvetronic fully variable valve timing system, enhancing power and fuel efficiency. "With a specific output of 113 hp/L, this package quickly rose to the top of a crowded field of new small-displacement 4-cylinder engines in this year’s competition," wrote Murphy.

Ward’s editors spent October and November driving the vehicles in their routine daily commutes around metro Detroit and scored each engine based on power, technology, observed fuel economy and noise, vibration harshness. To be eligible for the competition, each engine must be available in a regular-production U.S.-specification model on sale no later than first-quarter 2011, in a vehicle priced no more than $55,000, a price cap indexed to the average cost of a new vehicle.

Promise Fulfilled: Eco Supercar a "Brand Shaper for BMW"

With the amazing EfficientDynamics supercar unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show, BMW promised a four-seat gullwing machine with the acceleration of an M3 and the fuel economy of a Mini diesel. At that point, the car's complex hybrid system had never been tested. Now, production is just two years away, in 2013.

Testing has proven engineers' original simulations, so the car will proceed with very few changes. Nestled behind the back seats is a tiny 161-horsepower combustion engine linked to a compact double-clutch gearbox to drive the rear wheels. That isn't enough to do the acceleration numbers BMW promised: 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds.

So between engine and box, a disc-shaped motor adds a peak 51 horsepower. Another bigger motor adds up to 139 horses to the front wheels, in bursts of up to 10 seconds. Any longer and the batteries would overheat, so the front motor drops to 80 horses in steady-state running.

Overall system power becomes 323 horses. The test car's engine is a tiny 1.5-liter three-cylinder diesel, which would achieve the claimed economy figure. The car will have enough battery capacity to act as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, giving a claimed electric-only range of 30 miles.

The 2+2 weighs 3100 pounds, including batteries, enabled by widespread use of carbon fiber. Low mass is critical to squeezing good performance out of this powertrain, but so is low aerodynamic drag. Thanks to the concept's very low frontal area, the drag coefficient was just 0.22. Its "layered" construction has outer body panels mounted to the main body structure with a gap to channel air to critical parts such as the brakes, while creating little turbulence.

Ian Robertson, BMW's board member for sales and marketing, says it's "brilliant" to drive, but very different from a normal sports car.

He says that it would be a low-volume, high-price car. Certainly with the M3, BMW will offer more bang for the buck. But, as development chief Klaus Draeger says, this one is a "brand shaper for BMW," a car to get it out of its technological stall.

LOVELAND, CO – May 5, 2009 – Co’s BMW Center and Centerra together announce the addition of MINI Cooper to the 100-acre Motorplex at Centerra, located at Interstate 25 and Crossroads Boulevard in Loveland. MINI of Loveland will be located southwest of Co’s BMW Center at 4055 Byrd Drive.

Ground breaking for MINI of Loveland is slated for June 2009 with a grand opening estimated in January 2010. MINI of Loveland will draw customers from all over the Northern Colorado region in addition to North Denver, Wyoming, Kansas, and other bordering states. The future facility will offer a full sales, service and parts center.

As part of the BMW Group, MINI of Loveland plans to hire 17 associates. Christina Dawkins, Co’s BMW Center Owner & Operator, will serve as CEO of MINI of Loveland.

“The Co’s BMW family could not be more thrilled to grow the MINI brand in Northern Colorado. It is a unique niche vehicle that attracts customers who want a highly customizable and fun driving experience,” said Christina Dawkins, CEO, Co’s BMW Center.

The Motorplex at Centerra was selected as the second Colorado location based on strong regional customer demographics, close proximity to three major universities, a high-traffic centralized location, and the reputation of integrity Co’s BMW Center has earned in the Northern Colorado area since 1974.

“MINI of Loveland will be a tremendous addition to the Motorplex and to Centerra as a whole,” said Jay Hardy, VP/GM – Centerra, McWhinney. “Its unique energy and customer experience focus is a definite win for the Northern Colorado community.”

Designed by Kenney & Associates, the stand-alone MINI facility will be approximately 10,000 square feet and will be constructed out of black steel and glass, highlighted with exterior and interior splashes of neon color. The distinctive high-tech vision for MINI of Loveland focuses on the simple, experiential and interactive approach catering to a hands-on customer who wants a total customizable and individualized vehicle. Customers can also play in the MINI game room, utilize interactive tools to imagine and “test out” the experience of becoming a MINI owner and take part in regular driving events.

MINI customers will be able to personalize particular body color, in addition to unique stitching, roof paint, and other specialized options. MINI combines high performance with high fuel efficiency offering vehicles averaging from the upper 30s to lower 40s MPG. Prices range from $19,000 to $31,000 fully equipped.

When most automotive manufacturers are retracting, MINI is growing. In 2008, MINI Cooper experienced a 38% increase in sales over 2007. In 2009, the company plans to add a total of five to eight new franchises in the United States.

MINI of Loveland will be the second location in Colorado, in addition to Ralph Schomp MINI in Littleton.

BMW wins 'Great Designs in Steel' award

The Automotive Applications Council of AISI's Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) announced that it has selected the BMW X6 research and development team as the winner of its annual Automotive Excellence Award. The team was selected for its cost-effective use of ultra high-strength steels that meet new market demands for safety, fuel efficiency and emission standards. The award was presented today at the Great Designs in Steel seminar in Livonia, Mich.

The award recognizes individuals or teams from automakers, suppliers or the academic community who embrace innovation and make significant contributions to the advancement of steel in the automotive marketplace.

"The BMW X6 utilizes steel solutions that add to its unique, sporty design and meet new crash-test requirements, without sacrificing safety or increasing its weight," said Ron Krupitzer, vice president of automotive applications for AISI's SMDI. "BMW's innovative use of ultra high-strength steel technologies has resulted in a vehicle that is safe, lightweight, environmentally friendly and offers the best fuel economy in its class."

Award winners are chosen based on their presentation given at the previous year's Great Designs in Steel seminar. Candidates were rated in several categories, including: implementation in production; overall contribution to the advancement of steel; challenges and benefits associated with cost, mass reduction and performance; replacement of competitive materials; and structural performance and efficiency. The BMW X6 presentation was given by Markus Pfestorf of BMW Group and Duane Copeland of BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC.

BMW uses unique processing technologies and several complex, ultra high-strength steel grades in its design. The vehicle features a steel structure and steel side frames, panels, rear and B-Pillar reinforcements and longitudinal rear member, which improve cost, performance, reduce weight and meet Insurance Institute for Highway Safety side-impact crash test requirements.
